29. September 2018

Three summers of construction work, 38 companies involved and an investment of 60 milion Swiss francs: the maiden trip of the new Matterhorn glacier ride had to be celebrated in fitting style. The inauguration ceremony on Saturday 29 September 2018 gave an insight into the most impressive high-alpine construction project undertaken in recent years and also had one or two surprises in store for visitors.

On Saturday 29 September 2018, with more than 500 invited guests, the Zermatt Bergbahnen AG inaugurated the world's highest 3S cableway. The venue for the celebrations was the newly built valley station for the Matterhorn glacier ride at Trockener Steg (2'923 metres). From there, the ultramodern 3S cableway glides to its destination 900 metres higher up: Matterhorn glacier paradise (Klein Matterhorn). From now on, mountain sports enthusiasts and tourists are able to reach Europe’s highest mountain station at 3'821 metres in 25 comfortable cabins, each seating 28. With a carrying capacity of 2'000 passengers an hour, waiting times are a thing of the past. The nine-minute ride at a travel height of almost 200 metres above the ground offers first-class comfort and a fantasic all-round view of Zermatt’s majestic high-alpine panorama. The facts tell the story: for good reason, the construction project is being described as a true pioneering achievement.

The cableway is as high as the programme was promising

But before the doors of the Matterhorn glacier ride opened for the first time, there were celebrations in the brand-new valley station at Trockener Steg. After a short introduction by presenter Rainer Maria Salzgeber and a welcome address from the newly elected Chairman of the Board of Directors Franz Julen an Doris Leuthard, a short film entitled about the construction was premiered, taking guests on a journey into history. The presentation concluded with a round-table discussion, involving all the main project participants. They shined a light on all facets of this mammoth undertaking from a variety of angles. Show Acts, which included high-wire circus artist Freddy Nock, provided additional thrills and entertainment.

Blessings for the maiden trip

After the cableway had been blessed, the ceremonial red ribbon was cut and the proceedings moved on to the main highlight of the opening celebrations: the maiden trip to Matterhorn glacier paradise.

Trailer - Construction of the world's highest 3S Cableway

During the inauguration the trailer about the construction of the 3S cableway was premiered. To make this trailer Burkhard Feige had been filming the workers and the construction during almost 2 years. The result: Breath-taking images and beautiful scenes.
