Luxury and Thrills on the "Crystal ride"
Popular tourist destination, home of the iconic Matterhorn, playground of the rich and famous: Zermatt already has much to offer. But now the idyllic location in the Swiss canton of Valais has a new attraction: the Matterhorn glacier ride, offering an unforgettable trip in its four special “Crystal ride” cabins.
A joint project laden with superlatives. Leitner ropeways and the Tyrolean crystal manufacturer Swarovski joined forces to realize this very special project. The design and finish of the four “Crystal ride” cabins achieve an unequalled level of sophistication: the finest Italian design from the Pininfarina studio is embellished by sparkling Swarovski crystals as the finishing touch. The 3S cableway, connecting the Trockener Steg station with Matterhorn glacier paradise, has 21 further cabins in addition to the four “Crystal ride” gondolas. Swarovski used “Crystal Rocks” to bring sparkle to the cabin exteriors – a world first in the cable car sector. The result is stunning. Visitors are able to enjoy an exclusive experience when they board the crystal-encrusted gondolas for the trip to Europe’s highest mountain station at 3'883 metres.
Premium cabins with high-concept design
Sparkling Swarovski crystals coat the entire outer skin of the four special cabins and also adorn the interiors. The unique design of Matterhorn glacier ride was created by none other than Pininfarina, the design studio known around the world for its work with Maserati and Ferrari. Comfortable seats, inspired by car design and adorned with Swarovski crystals, ceiling lighting that resembles a starry sky, and the panoramic windows ensure an unforgettable nine-minute ride to Matterhorn glacier paradise.
World first in the cable car sector
Zermatt has once more created something quite unique: the new cableway and its innovative gondola cabins with a finishing touch of Swarovski crystals and an integrated glass floor. There is no comparable project anywhere in the world. In time, the Matterhorn glacier ride is set to become a must-see attraction for visitors from Switzerland and around the world. Sandra Stockinger: “We can hardly wait to see how guests will react to the new “Crystal ride”. Naturally, we hope they enjoy it as much as we enjoyed the development process and the cableway’s construction.” Two things are guaranteed when people board the new gondola lift in Zermatt: pure luxury and thrills galore. What’s not to enjoy?
Luxury meets Thrill
During the nine-minute journey to the highest mountain station in Europe, the four special gondolas reveal their spectacular view. Three minutes into the journey, at a height of 170 metres above the ground, the previously opaque glass floor will clear in seconds to offer a dramatic view down onto the glacier landscape. This effect is made possible by an active laminated glass sheet which turns from milky white to transparent under the effect of an electric current.
As Sandra Zenhäusern, Head of Marketing at Zermatt Bergbahnen explains: “The Crystal ride cabins will surprise our guests with a completely new ride experience. Now, they will be able to marvel at the mountain world around Zermatt in a unique 360-degree panorama.”
