In 2002 - almost 20 years ago - today's Zermatt Bergbahnen AG was formed from a merger of the Gornergrat-Monte Rosa-Bahnen, the Matterhornbahnen AG, the Standseilbahn Zermatt-Sunnegga AG, the Zermatter Rothorn-Bahn AG, Sessellift Findeln Sunnegga AG and the cooperative Trainerskilift Riffelberg. The construction of the first installation in the name of the new company started in the same year: the 8-seater gondola lift connecting Zermatt - Furi - Schwarzsee, the " Matterhorn-Express".
- Gondelbahn Zermatt-Furi (1982)
- Pendelbahn Furi-Schwarzsee (1958)
- Pendelbahn Furi-Furgg (1964)
The start of operation of the Matterhorn-Express between Zermatt and Schwarzsee was with a total of 154 cabins (OMEGA III model). More cabins were then ordered in 2009 for the extension of the gondola lift from Schwarzsee via Furgg to Trockener Steg.
IMPRESSIONS OF THE PAST

As the first cabins of the Matterhorn-Express were in use for 20 years, they are now being "retired". Get a piece of history of the Zermatt Bergbahnen AG now and order one of the 154 gondolas directly in our web shop! The gondolas will remain in operation for the 2021/22 winter season and can then be collected in Zermatt or Täsch in spring (detailed information to follow).

The cabins nr. 155 - 261 were purchased at a later date and are already OMEGA IV models. They will remain in operation. Of course, you also still have the option of booking the VIP gondola between Zermatt and Trockener Steg (or vice versa).
Yes, 154 new cabins (OMEGA IV model) will be reordered in order to ensure optimum transport capacity with the over 6 km long gondola lift. They will be in operation from 2022.
In principle, all cabins are sold without the rope suspension arm. If required, please send us an enquiry after purchasing your gondola. The arm will then be delivered with the cabin (without clamp). The cabins may not be used for transport purposes.
The cabin (without rope suspension arm) weighs about 350 kg.
Two pick-up locations will be defined for the Matterhorn-Express cabins, one in Zermatt and one in Täsch. We will be happy to send you detailed information on how to collect your cabin at the end of April. The cabins will still remain in operation during the winter season.
