Hiking in Zermatt

From idyllic meadows to daunting ridges

For many who live in the Alps or come to visit, hiking among the mountain peaks in Zermatt is the finest experience to be had in the summer. Some 400 kilometres of signposted hiking trails cross the Matterhorn summer paradise, ranging from pleasant family walks to heady trails high in the mountains, vertical climbs and dizzying Alpine paths.

Five Lakes Walk

Five crystal clear lakes, five alpine idylls, three Matterhorn reflections, two refreshing swims and one unforgettable experience for the whole family. It’s all included in the hike along the 5-Seenweg from Blauherd to Sunnegga.

The family-friendly hike along the Furi suspension bridge path is an experience packed with all kinds of adventures, big and small. From Zermatt you take the lift up to Furi (1867 metres above sea level) and then the path leads through the hamlet of Furi up to the larch trees, across a stream, through moorland and on to the big highlight of the hike: the suspension bridge.

Leisee: A family outing NOT TO BE MISSED

Families taking their summer holidays in Zermatt all agree on one thing: an outing to Leisee is a must. The pretty mountain lake on the Sunnegga sun terrace is a favourite spot for young and old, for a whole variety of reasons.

Many children love the lake because of Wolli, the Zermatt resort’s cuddly mascot. They might meet him with a little luck at Wolli’s Fun Park, one wish fulfilled among many others. At Wolli’s, the adventures seem never-ending, with play equipment, a cool stream with a water play area, barbecue and picnic areas, a play raft and a paddling area to cool off in.

Matterhorn glacier paradise

A family trip to the Matterhorn glacier paradise is an outing full of superlatives. The reasons are easy to see. Up there on the summit of the Klein Matterhorn you will have one “best-ever” experience after another. Glacier palace

The world’s highest glacier palace invites you to enter the realm of eternal ice. Fifteen metres underground, there is a fairy-tale world of glistening ice crystals, with an ice slide, a glacier crevasse you can walk through, and spots for taking cool photos. A place where children’s dreams come true and perfect for a family holiday.

Snow park Zermatt

The activity park in the glacier ski area is one of the highest in the Alps and one of the most popular – a real hotspot for freestylers. And for kids! Participants young and old can practise their first tricks on the imaginatively designed 300-metre course which features kickers, rails and obstacles of all sizes.

Funventure – that’s what we call all the super-exciting activities you can enjoy in the Alpine world of Zermatt, activities the whole family can enjoy. Families that love action love kickbiking! The descent on off-road scooters is huge fun for thrill-seekers of all ages. The trail goes from Sunnegga to the idyllic hamlet of Tufteren, then through the cool Swiss pine and larch forest into the village of Zermatt. A real downhill adventure you’ll find it hard to get enough of.

Where is the glacier ski area?

The summer ski area stretches from Trockener Steg at 2929 metres above sea level to Gobba di Rollin at 3899 metres. The 21 kilometres of pistes are perfectly maintained, with conditions so good that national teams and Alpine athletes from all over the world come to Zermatt for summer training. There’s every chance of snapping a family selfie with one of the top stars of winter sport!

Summer is for hiking. No, summer is all about biking! From sunrise to sunset: higher uphill, steeper downhill, faster to the finish, nearer to the Matterhorn – passionate mountain bikers love to push themselves to the limit. The rugged, high-alpine world around Zermatt seems just made for challenges on two wheels.

MANY ROADS LEAD TO ZERMATT

The Alpine village of Zermatt, nestling at the foot of the Matterhorn, can be reached without difficulty by public transport, car or private jet. As Zermatt is a car-free zone, there are parking spaces in the neighbouring village of Täsch for visitors arriving by car. The nearest international airports are in Geneva and Zurich.
