Time to break your personal best on the slopes!

The Matterhorn ski safari: the ultimate challenge

Clouds Clouds Clouds

Have you ever covered 10,000 metres of elevation change in a single day’s skiing before? No? Well, now’s the time to try – take the challenge on the Matterhorn ski safari. The good news is that there’s no opponent: just you, your skis, Zermatt Bergbahnen and the perfectly groomed slopes.

You can use the ski safari function in the Skiguide Zermatt app to keep a record of the lifts and trains you have used.

Silver or Gold?

The rules are simple: you must never use the same lift or railway twice or ski on the same run more than once. The route starts on the Rothorn. It continues via Riffelberg, the Theodul Glacier and Trockener Steg to the Matterhorn glacier paradise. To complete the ultimate challenge, go on to Breuil-Cervinia and Testa Grigia. As evening approaches, the route takes you back to Zermatt via Stafelalp.

The only decision you have to make is whether to go for gold or silver. There's one difference: on the Matterhorn ski safari gold route the elevation change amounts to 12,500 metres as you leave Switzerland and cover an extra 2000 metres of elevation change on the slopes of “bella Italia”. There are five trains and lifts in addition to the 24 on the silver route. Sound like a record-breaker? You bet it is!

With the Skiline app you can display a graph on your smartphone screen that shows the elevation changes covered in your perfect days’ skiing.
