The check-point is located on the border between Italy and Switzerland.
Transportation is not available on part sections of the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing (Cervinia – Zermatt or vice versa).
1.5 Check-in
Luggage belonging to customers using the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing from Zermatt to Cervinia must be checked in at the Matterhorn Express valley station in Zermatt. Luggage that has been checked in will be transported twice a day – once in the morning and once in the afternoon – from Zermatt to Cervinia (and vice-versa). Further information on opening hours and transportation can be found in

The customer will receive a receipt with which to collect their luggage.
Zermatt Bergbahnen AG is authorized to make a copy of the ID document and take photos of the pieces of luggage submitted. The provisions of the data protection declaration apply. Payment is taken locally on submission of the luggage at the relevant counter. Luggage may only be submitted on the day of travel/transportation and not in advance.
Non-standard transportation e.g. outside of normal hours or of materials or luggage exceeding the 32 kg limit is not provided for. Local contractors may be contacted for this.
1.6 Opening hours and transportation times
The luggage check-in counter in Zermatt is open daily from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. Checked luggage is transported twice a day from Zermatt to Cervinia (and vice-versa). The transportation takes place between 10 am and 12 pm and 2 pm and 4 pm.

1.7 Cancellation
It is not necessary to make prior reservations or register luggage in advance for checking in. However, we do recommend that you complete the Luggage check-in registration form https://matterhornalpinecrossing.com/en/luggage-check-in before travelling. Payment is taken locally on submission of the luggage at the relevant counter.

If a person wishing to collect luggage cannot produce the receipt, the luggage will only be handed over if its ownership can be established beyond doubt.
1.9 Unclaimed Luggage
ZBAG accepts no liability for the storage of luggage that is not collected in person by its owner on the day of travel. The customer shall reimburse ZBAG for the cost of storage at a rate of CHF 12.00 per day. Unclaimed items of luggage will be disposed of on expiry of the legal retention period at no cost to ZBAG.
1.10 Procedure in the event of irregularities
If the customer’s luggage cannot be located at the valley station or should it have been damaged during transport, the customer must report directly to the respective lift operator in Zermatt or Cervinia. A report will be produced immediately, stating the cause, circumstances and extent of any damage.
Items of luggage collected at the destination location with no immediate report of irregularities will be deemed in principle to have been properly handed over without fault and on time.
Any claims relating to damage, loss or delay must be made within seven days of the day of transportation using the claim form and the appendices included with the form and sent to the following email address: luggage@matterhornparadise.ch.
After this period any claim to compensation will lapse.
1.11 Liability and exemption from liability: General
Liability for loss, reduction, damage or delay is in accordance with the Swiss federal law on the carriage of passengers (Personenbeförderungsgesetz; PBG) and the applicable ordinance of the Federal Council on the carriage of passengers insofar as the cause of the claim occurred on the section between Zermatt and Testa Grigia or is demonstrably attributable to ZBAG (e.g. the consequence of delayed handover at Testa Grigia).
In the event of force majeure, ZBAG is exempt from any liability. Force majeure includes any unforeseen events such as extreme weather conditions, phenomena of nature, technical breakdowns or disruptions and environmental disasters which ZBAG was unable to prevent or whose consequences ZBAG was unable to prevent despite exercising due care.
Furthermore, any contractual or non-contractual liability on the part of ZBAG and its auxiliary staff is excluded to the extent permitted by law.
Liability for damage to items which are not eligible to be checked in as luggage, as described in 2.1 3. 1.11.1 Liability for delays
A delay is deemed to have occurred if the checked luggage does not reach the destination on the customer’s day of arrival. If the luggage is made available later on the same day no delay is considered to have occurred.
No liability is accepted by ZBAG if the luggage arrives late at the destination when all reasonable measures have been taken to prevent the delay or where it was demonstrably not possible to apply these measures.
If luggage is delivered late, ZBAG shall be liable for any proven damages (emergency purchases). Purchases of essential items of clothing and toiletries must be accompanied by a receipt. A maximum of CHF 200 will be reimbursed per item of luggage and for each 24 hours delay in delivery, for up to 14 days only however (maximum liability up to CHF 2,000 corresponding to the total loss). No reimbursement for delay will be paid if compensation is being paid for the complete loss of the luggage.
1.11.2 Liability for loss and damage
Liability for damage is excluded if the damage was caused by the specific characteristics of the luggage.
In the case of damage or loss in part or full, ZBAG shall be liable for proven damages up to a maximum amount of CHF 2,000 per luggage item.

- travel bags, suitcases, rucksacks, trolleys, sports and transport bags, etc.
ZBAG recommends that luggage including hand luggage is labelled so the customer can be contacted in case of loss.
2.1.1 Special items for check-in
Bicycles (including e-bikes)1 and other special equipment must be checked in and submitted at the luggage counter. Decisions and definitions about special luggage items shall in all cases be at the discretion of ZBAG. Special items not requiring check-in are listed under 2.3.1 Special items exempt from check-in; these may however be checked in at the request of the customer. They must be properly packed.
1 Bicycles may be carried in person only on the sections between Zermatt – Trockener Steg and Cervinia – Plan Maison. However, there is no check-in requirement for the full Matterhorn Alpine Crossing route. All bicycles must be dismantled and properly packed in transport bags or boxes and handed in at the luggage counter.
2.2 Vom Gepäcktransport ausgeschlossene Gegenstände und WarenCertain goods and objects could potentially endanger the safety of travellers and employees, or are banned by law for reasons of public order. The transportation of such goods and objects in hand luggage or checked luggage is therefore prohibited. The list includes but is not limited to:
- Loaded weapons
- Toxic, radioactive or corrosive substances or objects
- Flammable substances or objects
- Infectious substances (viruses, bacteria)
- Living or dead animals (dogs may be brought if on a lead)

- Any items prohibited under the applicable laws and regulations of the country of departure or arrival
- Items reasonably deemed by Zermatt Bergbahnen AG to be unsuitable for carriage because they are dangerous or unsafe or because they cannot be transported due to their weight, size, shape or composition
Furthermore, checked luggage must not contain money, medicines, keys, make-up, precious metals, computers, personal electronic devices, securities, bonds or other valuables, business documents, passports or other ID documents. If such items are nevertheless carried in the luggage, no liability whatsoever will be accepted in the event of loss or damage.
Should there be any suspicion that items not permitted for transportation are being carried, ZBAG may examine the luggage and refuse to take it. ZBAG may refuse to accept luggage with any such contents without incurring costs.
If pieces of luggage are accepted for transportation despite obvious defects on the suitcase/bag, ZBAG will document these at check-in with photos and a note will be added to the luggage receipt. The customer’s acceptance of the luggage receipt is deemed to constitute acknowledgement of the defects.
2.3 Luggage not requiring check-in
Personal effects and easy-to-carry items reasonably assumed to be necessary for a day out in the mountains, and valuables may be carried in hand luggage (backpack, bag) on the route from Zermatt to Cervinia and vice versa and do not need to be checked in. Decisions on whether a piece of luggage is too big or heavy or unsuitable to be carried as hand luggage will be at the discretion of the employees and binding for the customer.

Zermatt Bergbahnen AG reserves the right to open luggage even where it is secured with a lock or code. The customs authorities and Zermatt Bergbahnen AG accept no liability for any damage thereby incurred. Should the customs authorities request to search an item of luggage in the course of a check, the lift operators are required to open the luggage and unpack the owner’s personal effects so they can be checked and replace them and close the piece of luggage afterwards.

The sole place of jurisdiction for any disputes or claims relating to this contract, including its validity, invalidity, breach or termination is Visp.
