Zermatt Bergbahnen make the Zermatt - Matterhorn destination a place full of unique opportunities for sport, relaxation and enjoyment. In order to make this breathtaking mountain cosmos as accessible as possible to locals as well as visitors from all over the world, Zermatt Bergbahnen has been pursuing a well-thought-out transport and tourism strategy for many years.

A number of mountain railway companies (Matterhornbahnen AG, Zermatter Rothorn AG, Standseilbahn Zermatt-Sunnegga AG, Gornergratbahn Sport Area, Skilehrerlift Riffelberg and Sesselbahn Findeln) merged in 2002. This marked the founding of the largest independent cable car company in Switzerland - a success story at the foot of the Matterhorn

Milestones and pioneering achievements

Construction of the aerial tramway to the Little Matterhorn

The construction of Europe's highest-altitude aerial tramway was completed in late autumn 1979; following approximately three years of construction. A pioneering achievement at between 3,000 and 4,000 metres above sea level. 

The merger

A merger agreement resulting in the largest pure cable car company in Switzerland was approved by the shareholders of the mountain railway companies in Zermatt at the general meeting on February 15th, 2002.

Switzerland's largest cable car company

Effective since the merger of the mountain railway companies in February 2002, Zermatt Bergbahnen is now the largest pure cable car company in Switzerland. The merger brought about the unification of Matterhornbahnen AG, Zermatter Rothornbahn AG, Standseilbahn Zermatt-Sunnegga AG, Sport Area der Gornergratbahn, Skilehrerlift Riffelberg and Sesselbahn Findeln.

Switzerland's first autonomous gondola lift

The detachable 10-seater “Kumme” is Switzerland's first autonomous gondola lift. This autonomous cable car is introduced by Doppelmayr/Garaventa using the term “Autonomous Ropeway Operation” (AURO). AURO cable cars are characterised by their unmanned operation.

Matterhorn Glacier Ride I and II 

The Matterhorn Glacier Ride I and II are the world's highest three-cable gondola lifts and lead up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. These cable cars feature advanced technology, appealing design as well as outstanding comfort.

Matterhorn Alpine Crossing

The Matterhorn Alpine Crossing takes cable car travel to the next level. It is the highest cable-car crossing of the Alps between two countries

Projects and investments 

Since 2002, Zermatt Bergbahnen AG has invested a total of over 600 million Swiss francs:  355 million in transport facilities, 136 million in pistes and snow-making facilities, 47 million in machinery, movables and piste vehicles, 48 million in other facilities, 18 million in IT and digital information system
