Three Years of Matterhorn Alpine Crossing
Three years ago, the opening of the Matterhorn Glacier Ride II between Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Testa Grigia created the highest-altitude cross-border cableway connection in the Alps. Since then, under the name Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, the route between Zermatt (CH) and Cervinia (IT) has provided a spectacular year-round link, delighting guests from all over the world.
What was once a vision has become a tourism experience with international appeal: starting the morning in Zermatt, gliding above glaciers and high-alpine landscapes with the iconic Matterhorn as a constant companion, and just a few hours later enjoying the Italian way of life in Cervinia or even in Milan.
Continuous Development of the Experience
The journey around the Matterhorn fascinates guests from all over the world. From the car-free mountain village of Zermatt, the route leads past high-alpine landscapes, glaciers and impressive panoramas all the way to Breuil-Cervinia on the Italian side of the Matterhorn. The connection offers not only a change of country, but also a change of perspective between two cultures and ways of life. With the modern 3S cableway, a mountain range has also been crossed that for centuries was regarded as a natural barrier between the two regions. Today, it connects people, destinations and experiences in a unique way.
Over the past three years, the experience has been consistently developed further. One important milestone is the new luggage transport service between Zermatt and Cervinia. As when travelling by air, guests can conveniently check in their luggage at the luggage counter in Zermatt or Cervinia and enjoy the Alpine crossing in comfort with only hand luggage. This makes the spectacular cableway journey even more comfortable and turns it into an experience reminiscent of a flight floating above the Alps: stylish, emotional and full of highlights.
The tourism infrastructure along the route is also continuously evolving. On the Italian side, Cervino S.p.A. is driving forward the expansion of the connection between Breuil-Cervinia and Testa Grigia with its major project “Cervino The One”. A modern 3S cableway with an intermediate station at Plan Maison will further improve access to the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing and additionally strengthen the cross-border connection between Switzerland and Italy. In doing so, both destinations are making a long-term investment in a travel experience that connects the Alpine region across national borders.
From the world’s highest glacier palace and the viewing platform overlooking 38 four-thousand-metre peaks and 14 glaciers in three countries to the border crossing between Switzerland and Italy at almost 3,500 metres above sea level: the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing is an experience for guests and locals alike, combining cableway comfort with the flair of an exclusive airline.
Collaboration with partners is also being continuously expanded. A new partnership with railtour now offers an attractive travel package combining the rail journey to Zermatt, the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing and onward travel to Milan. The journey brings together the impressive mountain world at the foot of the Matterhorn with the urban flair of the Italian metropolis, turning the Alpine crossing into a multi-day travel experience. The offer combines nature, sustainable mobility and an urban lifestyle in a journey that goes far beyond a classic day trip.
Anniversary Celebration on Testa Grigia
To mark the third anniversary, Zermatt Bergbahnen and Cervino S.p.A. will jointly celebrate the birthday of the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing on 28 June 2026 with a special offer.
On this day, guests will benefit from a 50% discount on the standard fare on the following routes:

On Testa Grigia, guests can also look forward to an Italian aperitivo in a special atmosphere directly on the national border between Switzerland and Italy.
A Connection with a Future
Today, the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing stands for far more than a cableway connection. It links landscapes, cultures and people on both sides of the Matterhorn and creates a travel experience that is continuously being developed further. With new services, international partnerships and innovative offers, the Alpine crossing will remain a flagship project of Alpine tourism in the future.
The anniversary offers the ideal opportunity to experience the unique connection between two countries, cultures and tourism destinations, while raising a glass to the successful development of the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing.
