State-of-the-art: the new Patrullarve 6-seater chairlift

A new generation of cable car technology is set to begin at Matterhorn Ski Paradise: the oldest chairlift in the ski area, the 4-seater Patrullarve, is to be replaced by a state-of-the-art 6-seater chairlift after 37 successful years of operation. Construction will begin immediately after the end of the winter season, meaning winter sports enthusiasts will be able to enjoy the new facility from the 2026/27 season onwards.

The new chairlift utilises the innovative ‘ROPERA’ technology from cable car manufacturer Leitner. It combines state-of-the-art technology with a contemporary design inspired by the Gifthittli chairlift, which opened in November 2025, thereby creating a consistent look across the ski resort. The installation also plays a pioneering role in technical terms: as the first chairlift of this type in Switzerland and the second worldwide, it sets new standards in the international cable car industry. The latest “ROPERA” technology impresses with its high performance, quiet operation and efficient, sustainable construction. Durable components, optimised maintenance intervals and energy-efficient systems contribute significantly to this. Furthermore, the new installation stands for operational efficiency and occupational safety. With a modular structure and easily accessible components, maintenance tasks are simplified, downtime is minimised and productivity is increased. At the same time, modern safety features ensure a safe and ergonomic working environment.

With this investment, Zermatt Bergbahnen AG (ZBAG) is underlining its commitment to continuously enhancing the mountain experience and offering guests state-of-the-art infrastructure of the highest standard. The new Patrullarve chairlift thus exemplifies the company’s innovative spirit and forward-looking approach – and a skiing experience that will continue to set new standards in the decades to come. Alongside the Kumme gondola lift and the Hublot chairlift, this facility will also be equipped for autonomous operation. Using the ‘LeitPilot’ system, the lift will operate with an unmanned mountain station. Here too, ZBAG demonstrates its consistent implementation of the latest technologies in the industry.

Historical background
The National ski lift (Patrullarve–Blauherd) opened on 1 February 1965; it was one of the first facilities in the Sunnegga–Blauherd area and one of the early projects undertaken by Zermatter Rothornbahn AG. At the time, this ski lift had a capacity of around 4,700 passengers per day. However, as visitor numbers increased, this capacity proved increasingly inadequate and waiting times grew ever longer. A more efficient alternative was therefore sought. Within a year of construction, the Patrullarve 4-seater chairlift was completed, with a capacity of 2,400 passengers per hour. The route was slightly adjusted to achieve as straight a line as possible. At the same time, in the summer of 1989, the National ski lift was overhauled once again, in case the construction of the chairlift could not be completed in time. However, the new facility was opened on schedule for the 1989/90 winter season on 6 December 1989 and transported a total of around 24 million guests over 37 years. The name ‘Patrullarve’ has remained to this day and, according to tradition, is said to have originated from the combination of the terms ‘Arve’ and ‘Patrouille’.
